Inherent Familial Tremor (Parkinsonian syndrome)

I just watched E's story on the Osbournes and saw Sharon and Ozzy talking about his tremors. My husband also suffers from Inherent familial tremors (inherited from his Mom). He is 53 and since he was 49 he has been 100% handicapped from his shaking (along with other disorders). In March of this year he underwent Deep Brain Stem Stimulation surgery. It is done in 2 stages. he had the 2nd stage surgery on April 4 and 3 weeks later his neuroligist programmed the receptors implanted in his chest and abdomen, the shaking immediately stopped. I am writing this in hopes that somehow Sharon or Ozzy reads this and Ozzy speaks to his Doctors about this surgery. It is an intense surgery but being able to do things on his own again has been a blessing to him.

Hello carico.katie,

sad to hear that you and your family have this desease.
Have you read what I posted before from Sharon's book?

On the second page she mentions the name of Ozzy's doctor. Maybe you can make contact or get an adress of a good specialist in your area.
I don't think Ozzy had "deep brain stimulation". At least he never talked about it.
I heard about this treatment as well. It pretty much depends on the sort of tremour you have.
Sorry, I don't know anything else.

Good luck.

I want to find out what the doctors have used to help Ozzy. I have heard of DBS (deep brain stimulation) and have wondered if that is what finally helped him. My family is cursed with movement disorders, some of my siblings more so than others, and I REALLY want to find something that will help them. I currently have mine pretty well under control with use of Parkinson's drugs -- but I am the youngest so I do worry that with time mine will become worse. My oldest brother, who is a brilliant space physicist, can barely even write anymore. My next to oldest brother keeps his movement under control with minimal medication, and my sister, so far, just lives with her tremors. I am on a pretty high dose of medication, which does cause quite a bit of stomach upset and tends to make me a little forgetful and sometimes quite depressed.

Ok....point taken, but maybe you didn't understand what I said before....maybe i wasn't clear. Even if he had NEVER touched an alcoholic drink, or a drug, he STILL would suffer from this, because it is HEREDITARY...i'm sorry, I dont mean to jump down your throat, it just bothers me that people are so judgmental of Ozzy in that way....i mean, even if the guy had lived a TOTALLY straight life, this still would have happened...take this lady's husband as an example. I'm sure he's not an alcoholic or drug addict, and yet, there it is...and he was totally handicapped.....I really sympathize with Ozzy, i'm sorry, I can't explain it, and even if I did, maybe no one would understand why I stick up for him so much and see his side of things. Again, I'm not angry at you....just frustrated when people act in a judgmental way. I"m sorry.

But they wouldn't be as bad as they are, which isn't saying much cause it isn't very bad at all.

I kind of agree with ya on the drug thing, drug abuse may speed up the process so to speak, but hereditary is hereditary, that means the core problem of it all is genetics, not other outside pollutants.

The fact of the matter is that the body mutates constantly, sometimes causing certain forms of cancer, & other deadly diseases, it is only now with doctors mapping out the gene code that we realize that there is not just one form of any known cancer, but many! Lets take breast cancer for an example, in order to treat breast cancer you have to realize that not every form is the same, that there are many different strains & they each feed off their own particular thing in the human body in order to survive/thrive. If doctors can understand what forms feed off of what, then they have a fighting chance of beating these kinds of cancers off. The body is a complex thing, & genetics are the key to us resolving a lot of these encumbrances brought on by disease, & some have nothing to do with outside pollutants, its just a matter of the cards your dealt.

I agree Ozzy seems to be managing his illness, I am with OjZoZhYn that as long as Ozzy can have a comfortable life living with it on a day to day basis, then avoid going under the blade, one never knows what you may get, you may wake up thinking your getting your tonsils clipped, only to wake up missing a left nut, so I try to avoid surgery at all cost! lol

Later peeps..........

"Being sober on a bus is, like, totally different than being drunk on a bus." - Ozzy Osbourne

Now there is something I didn't say, I too agree with the "if it ain't broken dont try to fix it' theory. As long as he has his thing under control, then there's no need to go in there surgically. I myself (for necessity) have gone under the knife a total of about 23 times (i was born with spina bifida so loads and loads of sugeries to fix everything.....neither Ozzy nor I can ever clear airport security, between the metal plate in his neck and all the metal i've got in my body.....we'd be settin off alarms all over the place!) so....I happen to agree with that. Sorry that my original post was so long-winded and I sorta went off on a tangent. I'm usually not apologetic for someone else's behavior....but there's a lot that i think is misunderstood.

Most metal used in surgery is a kind that doesn't usually set off metal detectors at the airport and such. I myself have a metal rod in my back and I fly all the time without setting them off. But I guess in other cases certain metals don't work aswell.

It was a JOKE.....i was kidding.....not about having the metal rods, about the airport security thing...

I guess part of the reason why I empathize with Ozzy so well is because I am a disabled individual and even though most of you dont see him as such, he is...just because he can now walk and talk successfully and have a career and do all the things he does, remember in the back of your mind that if it were not for medication he'd still be acting the same way we remember him acting on The Osbournes.....he IS, for better, for worse a disabled individual who is living a VERY normal life (thank God) and Murphsma also brought up a VERY valid point.....people also assume that Ozzy is not intelligent, when in fact he is smart as a whip and more "on the ball" than even he leads us to believe. Let him be silent and just watching....he's capturing it all. He's MUCH smarter than most people give him credit for. I was appalled when watching the E True Hollywood Story that prompted this thread, and learned that Ozzy was actually hit by teachers when he was in school.....just because they didn't understand that he was dyslexic and thought he was just dumb....today, man, if you even LOOK at a child in an even SLIGHTLY weird way you've got a lawsuit on your hands, it's unbelievable....people have NO RIGHT to hit a child, and much less when the child isn't theirs! Ozzy's pretty sane for all the hell he's been through in his life, I think he's a true survivor, and those of you who think that Sharon was a bad thing for him, and that she's bilking him for money, better think again.....if not for her, he may not even be around today....and think of it this way, she could have managed his career, but didn't have to marry him. No one obliged her to do that, they fell in LOVE...it' happens.

Anyways, just wanted to add my two cents to the convo, hope y'all didn't mind my thoughts.

Mama2Tyler is so right in what she said, many people thought my hubby mustbe drugged or drunk (actually he is a redneck former marine who loves Qzzy and Black Sabbath, I'm the old tree hugging hippie)and did make fun of him , just as people assume his 82 year old Mom must just be old and senile because of the symptoms, the shaking ,slurred speech (which people with inherent familial tremors try to disguise by taking longer to answer...therefore people think they are not very bright either), the staggering (you try walking with your whole body shaking), But Scapegoat mentioned that Ozzy seems to be handling his illness just fine on a day to day basis, unfortunately some of the medicines used to control the shaking intensify some of the other symptoms...the stumbling (which in hubbys case lead to some dangerous falls),the slurred speech, and may dangerously lower your blood pressure. I was just saying Ozzy and Sharon may find the DBSS surgery something to discuss with his neurologist.AS for surgeries it saved my life from ovarian cancer, but then again almostv cost my Hubby his life when he ate his shrimp creole too fast and lodged one in his esophagus, that surgeon used too big an endoscope, tore his esophagus and left him in ICU for 5 days...brain surgery was a breeze compared to that...lol. Either way Thanks for the replies and I am wishing and praying for the best for Ozzy and family...they brighten our world

Hello Murphsma, I thought you might find this intersting. It's four pages of Sharons autobiography where she talking about Ozzy's condition. I made a quick scan and post it for you. Good luck to you and your husband.

I tihnk she said she is talking about the year 2003. You might remember he was as well overmedicated back then and sheduled his upcoming European Tour because of his tremour. So it must have been the summer 2003, after Ozzfest.

wow.....I actually read that (i'm sorry i know it was directed at Murphsma....)and I was amazed!!!!! Only three people in the world have what he has??? Or was it at the time she was writing the book.....which was how long ago? This is amazing information to me......Thanks for sharing and I hope Murphsma soaks up this knowledge too...it's incredible. Thank you once again for sharing.

I think he keeps the tremors in check by way of medication, perhaps this option was never looked into, or maybe it was and was decided it wasn't viable for him, but either way, your story is an inspirational one and i am very happy for your husband that he's now back to himself. May this also serve as a reminder that what Ozzy suffers from is REAL that it is NOT made up, NOT a cover-up for something more serious, and NOT (and this is probably the most important part) due to his previous drug and alcohol abuse. This is not the RESULT of something else. It's nothing more than genetics at work....think about it this way: too many people make fun of Ozzy because of what they saw on The Osbournes...they saw him shaking and stumbling when he walked and not being able to speak correctly, and people made fun of him. Would you make fun of somebody who is what we call in society, "legitimately" disabled? Would we make fun of someone who wears braces on their legs? Or is in a wheelchair? Or has any other of the numerous disabilities out there? No? Why? Because it isnt' their fault that they are that way, right? WELL THEN DON'T MAKE FUN OF OZZY!!!!!!

Once again Murphsma, I'd like to congratulate you on your husband's good fortune of finding a way to help himself so wonderfully, and thank you once again for this post.

Yes he has a genetic tremor but all of the drugs and booze didn't help any. Ozzy seems to cope with it, and if his quality of life isn't affected very badly there is no reason to undergo dangerous surgery.
