'SCREAM' or 'Nostalgia' Tour?

Review Ozzy's setlist for this past six months on the 'Scream' tour and note: only one song has been featured on this tour from the album ~ 'Let Me Hear You Scream.'

Reviews of his shows are glowing, of course, because he's got an amazing repertoire of songs that have been classic songs for 30 years.

However, there is buzz of him being 'nostalgic' now. Not a good thing for fans who would prefer to see him as relevant and contemporary.

Why do you think he's only playing one song from the album? Is it because he doesn't know the lyrics? Because the songs aren't doable live? Because Churko would get a huge chunk of royalties? ????

I don't think that there is anything "nostalgic" about this tour. Nostalgia is Leonard Cohen playing 2 shows in as many years and charging HUNDREDS of DOLLARS face value for even the crappiest seat.

He embarked on a BRUTAL 18 month non-stop WORLD tour !! Going to places like Budapest, Brazil, Poland, Africa, Hungary, all over Europe, Peru, the whole USA, and dozens and dozens of other places that nobody ever goes to. I don't know if you've ever been away from home for an extended period of time (Granted he stays in the best hotels, million dollar tour buses, flies first class or a private jets), but no matter how good the conditions are on the road, but lets face it, its always nice to YOUR HOME. It probably isn't nearly as the luxury hotel you just spent the last week living it up in....but it is always nice to come home to your space, your bed, etc... and lets be realistic here, being a Rockstar looks and I'm sure it can be a lot of fun, but its also WORK. They don't sit in cubicles, or spend all day on the phone, or weld steel or any of a million jobs you could have. But it is a JOB for them. It's GOING to WORK. Granted, it beats running a jackhammer all day, but is still what they do to make a living for themselves and their families.

Currently aged 62, I feel privileged to still be able to see not only my all time favorite musician, never mind that he is an ICON. As for his set list it does change from night to night. There are always the classics and his Sabbath tunes, but it is not at all unusual for a band of any significance to only touch on one or two of their newest material. Its great s***. SCREAM is a fantastic album, I think the tunes on it are great and really great. But think about it if he was to hit the stage and out a possible 13-15 tunes, he chose to perform 4 or 5 of his newest stuff, a lot of people would be pissed and disappointed and probably not all that familiar with the newer material.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get to attend 3 of OZZY'S shows. He rocked out in NYC at Madison Square Garden, and the sold out crowd was really pumped up and excited to witness the OZ. Then thanks to an old friend, I was given a seat in a VIP SKYBOX at his show in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida. And Incidentally he performed "SOUL SUCKER" & "LET ME HEAR YOU SCREAM" And last but not least, I made the 6000 mile trek down to Rio de Janeiro to meet up with a friend who is a Mgr. at the venue, who was able to secure BACKSTAGE PASSES. It was an incredible time. Got to meet the band, had the honor of getting a couple of minutes to bulls*** with OZZY himself. He truly is a super nice, genuine guy. And he still looks like he's having fun up there. A lot of musicians just look like they are just going thru the motions.

And last but not least.....I have a little known secret for you....(OZZY HAS A TELEPROMPTER WITH THE WORDS TO EVERY SINGLE SONG RIGHT AT HIS FEET). So now you know.

OZZY FAN 4LIFE

...yep. Gus G is one sexy man. that's for sure. why, watching the show I was struck with how sexy a man stable there is up there onstage. playing the music of our souls. i mean, what equivalent thing do we women have of sexiness embodied so stirringly in our boring freaking world? nothing. zip.

first, there was Slash (who I would have to disagree, because I think his riffs are far more well defined and melodic and memorable then Gus G, but only because Gus hasn't had his shot to write and release stuff for fans to know and love yet, and just because Slash is a living legend, but I understand why you might feel that way - especially if his show was off)...Slash is just so gifted. watching and hearing him play...wow, I was in tears with so many of the note by note solo's he has written that have held such deep meaning in my life. hearing him play them just ROCKED my world!

Adam Wakeman is tall and elegant, with dignity, a great sense of humor. he's like a long, lanky lion ... with incredible talent, a bit of shyness that he should DEFINITELY get over (he's like 70's rock stars, just such sexiness... yummay!)

Then you see Mr. Athletic Tommy Clufetos putting his freak on the place with his drumming like "Animal." Unreal, and so very sexy...

Then you watch Blasko striding around like a black puma ...passionate, mature, intense, rocking, dangerous...pirate. just intensely beautiful to watch playing.

and then you have Ozzy. just a flick of his fingers and I'm with you girl, on my feet screaming and jumping. the humor, the dimples, the constant motion, the riling of his crowd. watching the light on his face and the angles he faces us in, flashing me to when he was 20, 30, 40, and so on...throughout the years. just strumming me in my soul for how many memories I have of his beloved face and music. it's insane! because of the meaning he's had to me since I was 12, and I'm 47 now, he's just the ultimate beauty ~*

i have to say, nothing graphic in THAT way would ever even TOUCH how intense my visuals were just piqued watching them from 3rd row. OMFG girl. lol. someone joked that Gus G with the fan is like a rock and roll Favio for women. I'm like "he doesn't need the fan, but sweetie, it sure looks FINE!!!" but the thing that was AMAZING was when he played standing right in front of me, with magic fingers, all of the classic tunes and solo's that I love so deep in the center of my soul. You know? GOD that was amazing.

that is very cool that Ozzy did that... i had similar experiences. In Phoenix given how far back my daughter and I were, I wanted connection to him. I screamed his name when others were quiet and it did seem he'd look my way. a couple times. of course he wouldn't have seen me way back in row 24... the row I got because Comerica sold all the front half of the theatre to markup resellers.

then just before the band left the Phx stage I screamed "Ozzy! I love you!!! Ozzy!!!" and he paused a second right that last step before exiting the stage.=o).I thought that was awesome too!

I think he heard us girl!

Ok so, the show was totally amazing (:
I sadly wasnt close enough on floor level to get sprayed but a lil ways to the right, but he still
seemed so close to me!
He sang the song war pigs which was my dream song for him to sing, and he did (: I absolutely love the song,
I kinda lost my voice a bit... When it was all quiet when the song was over and he was getting a drink, I screamed
I LOVE YOU OZZY! jumping up and down and clapping, and he looked over my way and did a big goofy smile and raised his arms to form a cross :D <3

As for Slash he was alright, he seemed pissed off about something, I think it was cause his singer Myles kennedy was all mad cause no one knew his songs and said "your here for ozzy right?" and we all cheered.. so maybe Slash was irate that he said that.

Gus. G is like eddie van halen and Randy Rhodes put together, this kid is so talented i literally was clapping and screaming and then i just froze in awe, when he played his solo, sent shivers down my spine and goosebumps. Probably going to be the next great guitarist of my generation (: Im confident that if him and slash were in a duel he wouldve blown Slash away.

I didnt get to take any pictures sadly because i had no camera, but what an amazing night.

Diddo angel

I totally agree darkblade, im thrilled if ozzy plays just a few good songs from scream (loved all of them which you mentioned)
but im a young fan and ive missed out on opportunities on seeing him play, from previous albums, like songs from Sabbath, and of course his Solo career, Im estatic that he made a new album Ozzy rocks!
but im for one perfectly fine if he only plays a few songs from SCREAM and the rest his hits (:
Love the ozz man!

Here here Fozzy! Even people writing articles are asking why. Which is what I attempt to translate here in this discussion. Good or bad the way I put it, it's been a question buzzing around as I have watched press and fans react to his tour. Because he doesn't have more than one song from Scream! And a whole new lineup is with him.

I love Let it Die, Life Won't Wait, Crucify, and Time. They ROCK!

So, shall it be "the next album" always? LOL. On 'the next album' these men will play their own songs. I thought that WAS what Scream was! Not to mention, he said this was 'the Scream tour!' I like to hear musicians "at home" with their own songs. I want to hear Gus G, Tommy C, Adam W, and Rob B rippin' what they wrote out to the crowd!

I must say, the two shows I went to recently were fantastic. They always are, some much more than others! I think LA will forever rest in my heart as THE most beautiful experience I have ever had, ever. I've loved the POD for 35 years, and what I saw really touched my heart. Even if he did only sing one song from Scream. I've been with him since the Sabbath days.

It was kind of the same way with Slash. He played 3 songs from Slash, and I wanted more! The trip down GnR lane was a bit too much ([GNR 'Rocket Woman' & 'Nighttrain'] and ['Mean Bone' Snakepit]). Of course he can't NOT play 'Paradise City,' 'Civil War,' or 'Sweet Child.' But we all know that he's going to do them and want that!! That'd be like Ozzy NOT doig Crazy Train. It just would be weird.

Myles can sing the range, sure. But who cares?! I love 'By the Sword,' something Slash only now plays in his solo tour but no longer with Ozzy. Even though he DID at the earlier shows. Major bummer! Love Slash's Velvet Revolver stuff, 'Slither' too. I love 'Fall to Pieces.' BEYOND love it.

When it's toooooo much the past though? It makes ya feel like something is missing.

And angel...lol, thanks...I know what you're saying. I've followed Ozzy for a long time (35 years). and in between times I don't listen to Muzak lolz....I am a big rocker. by that I mean I keep up with all the latest in the metal and hard rock and 'other' scenes. always have!

Scream is HOT. aside of 'Let Me Hear You Scream,' it doesn't get included on the stations that play mostly Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, and Linkin Park. but that doesn't mean many who listen to those bands aren't listening to Scream.

Don't know why.
The album is great, my fave Ozzy album in a long while, would really love to hear about 5 or 6 tracks from it live, but sadly its not to be.
I remember watching him back in 1995 supporting Ozzmosis and he played nothing from it, later in the tour he added a couple from it tho,but why oh why won't he play more from Scream I really can't understand. When Ozzy is been interviewd maybe the interviewer should ask him why this is, instead of the usual s***e he gets asked in every interview, stuff we've all heard a thousand times.
When the tour started off last summer I could understand just playing the one track from it, but as the tour rolled on I thought more would be added, Let it die, Diggin Me Down, Soul Sucker, Life Won't Wait and Crucify would all be great live, c'mon Ozz, add them to the set-list.

Ozzy has many fans over the years, and has many hit songs, yes he's doing a scream tour,
but i myself along with other people, would be disappointed if he didnt play any of his songs from
previous albums..
Granted. Ozzy still has amazing vocals, but his new album has only really a few popular songs,
in todays style of metal music.. which lacks amazing guitar solos!!
Ozzy knows how to put on a show, and to get his fans going. & he will give the fans what they want.
& clearly long time ozzy fans and even new, would want to hear music from Sabbath and songs from his albums
such as Blizard of Ozz, and others.
Its what hes famous for..If fans wanted to hear todays new sounding music, they would go to other shows, besides ozzman. Just my opinion, and how i see it. (:

I know Ozzy loves us all. And wants everyone to be happy.

I know his setlist comes from wanting to bring joy to everyone's hearts.

But he needs to realize that TONS AND TONS of NEW fans have come to him BECAUSE OF SCREAM! And TONS AND TONS of current fans think SCREAM is the best album in many, many, many years!

Not playing more from his album is like him hitting the road with Randy Rhoads and doing 9 songs from Sabbath and 1 from their Blizzard album. If Ozzy had done that in the day, where would he be NOW?

#1 it doesn't showcase his current talent!
#2 it's arch-conservative, pushing the past (familiar) vs holding to the new!
#3 it keeps fans from hearing an album that is very relevant and rocking! who else is gonna perform it?

TOO WEIRD!

Too much of the past. Ozzy has dropped the one Scream song played live. I would love to see video of that other Scream song. I've followed his tour, to my recollection it didn't happen.

I totally disagree with your summary of his fans not receiving the Scream album well, nor his current songs. TOTALLY.

Consider the men on stage with him. They're fantastic. The band should write and play the new songs live. That they do so much of the past to the exclusion of present is a waste of incredible talent. Were they with any other band that wouldn't be the case. That is the reason it's come to be said in the press that Ozzy's become "nostalgic."

Not just in his current band but in Sabbath too. Fans (and they are real ones) say "enough of the Paranoid, Iron Man, War Pigs, wouldn't it be killer to write some NEW music and PLAY IT LIVE too?" Many believe that Ozzy has the pipes and stage presence again now that he's sober, but his setlist with them would also be canned. The past is great, but what about laying it down as masters TODAY, showing what real stuff is TODAY?

In both cases there is the criticism that he's not engaging in REAL TIME with a band anymore.

I love the man very much. Beyond reason. And its not a newsflash on the teleprompter. But I have to say maybe there is room for some stretching on his part. He has his band learn every single song from his repertoire, but then never plays them. He wrote a killer album, but doesn't perform it live.

Maybe if he does work with these guys on a new album, he'll actually perform most of it live this time.

Just sayin.

Besides. How can it be 'The Scream' tour when he doesn't even play the album? That's a bit of a deceptive name for the tour.

I think all his new fans who have come to love him in recent years, 'Down to Earth,' 'Black Rain,' 'Scream,' they deserve to hear what led them to Ozzy. His fans are FLUID ... he continues to capture the hearts of new generations. While the past is of course important, so too IS THE PRESENT!

Not to mention that many want to hear NEW STUFF PLAYED! I would not like it if Metallica wrote their newest album, then toured playing 'Ride the Lightning,' 'Master of Puppets,' and 'Kill 'Em All' hits. Hell no. They are CONTEMPORARY, and they tour promoting THEIR NEW TUNES (thank GOD!).

That's the defining line between 'Nostalgic' and 'Contemporary.' Most 'Nostalgic' bands focus on well known tunes from glory days, 'Contemporary' bands want to remain connected and viable to music afficionado's so they play RECENT tunes. Like one or two from the past, but not as their headlining songs (closing, never, for sure).
