I have learned to go inside and comfort myself. What is done is past, and it can't be changed. That's reality. Not just shooters take life away. Cars do, inebriated drivers do, even happenstance accidents do. The important thing to remember and take comfort from are all of the people around us who would never in a million years dream of doing something intentionally malicious to others. Love and human decency are the common threads that tie us to one another despite anything else.
Who knows why someone chooses to do such a thing. However, nothing that is done to harm in the end goes unpunished. Even if it isn't here on earth. I do believe that. And, crossing to the other side can't help but be experienced by those who have fallen as very loving. They await us all...
